Adapting to Life in God’s Own Country

It was early February in Dayton Ohio.

The weather was cold for a guy fresh from Africa.

I made a phone call from the bus station for pick up.

My host had delegated Beebee to pick me since he was at work.

He made me feel at home offering sandwiches and hot tea to arrest my cold.

He also gave me a long-distance calling card to call the family.

I met my host after work and exchanged pleasantries.

Lesson 1 Deodorant

Bk (my host) gave me a deodorant and said,

“Please use this after every shower, people here are very blunt, they will tell you that you smell if you don’t use this”.

I thanked him profusely and kept the gift.

Lesson 2 Use of Electricity

Let me tell you how we use light here, he said,

“You are allowed to use light only wherever you are in the house”.

I took note of the message and filed it away.
